Description
Jeanne Louise Genet, Madame CAMPAN (1752–1822). Autograph MANUSCRIPT, *Le Songe de Madame* (1783); 5 folio pages with deletions and corrections.
An episode from the childhood of MADAME ROYALE.
Then aged five, and therefore in 1783, the little girl tells her mother about a dream she has just had. MARIE-ANTOINETTE, deeply shaken, asks Mme Campan to take the child away… ‘I returned to the Queen. She was weeping, her hands were trembling, [...] her daughter had told her about the dream she’d had that night [...] she had dreamt that assassins had entered the Queen’s bedroom, killed her in her bed, and thrown her dead body out of the windows onto the terrace”. Madame Campan tries to reassure the Queen. She exclaims: “But that bedroom! That very same bedroom where, six years later, a furious mob sought to break in to murder the Queen casts a marvellous yet sinister light on this child’s dream”... This anecdote does not appear to have been included in Madame Campan’s Memoirs.
