Description
Jeanne Louise Genet, Madame CAMPAN (1752–1822). Letter from the author, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 12 Thermidor, Year IX (31 July 1801), to a Citizen; 3 pages, in-4. She thanks her correspondent for his help: ‘The octogenarian on whose behalf I am writing is the husband of Mr de LALLY TOLENDAL’s wet nurse. I have taken charge of his wife, who is as infirm as he is; both would have a far gentler lot had their master, their protector, not lost his entire fortune through the confiscation and sale of his property in France; he can do nothing but offer fervent prayers for these two elderly people”. She is flattered by the trust he places in her: “To mention Mr de Lally is to speak of one of the men most devoted to the duties of gratitude”; once he learns the name of the person who has helped ‘an elderly man whose misfortunes and infirmities are a further burden upon his miseries’, she has no doubt that he will thank him personally…
