Jeanne Louise Genet, Madame CAMPAN (1752–1822). Letter from the author, [Saint-Germain-en-Laye], 6 Messidor XI (25 June 1803), to M. de Mackau; 2 pages, quarto size, address with postmark, stamp of the F. Nasse collection (enclosed engraved portrait). A lovely letter to ‘Anette’s dear Papa’. She will listen to Mr Tessier and have her pupils listen to him too, but she adds mischievously: ‘I am indebted to Mlle Genet, formerly a reader to the Daughters of France and now performing the same duties for the Queen, and to Maître Campan, who was able to whistle the tragedy of Esther to a small troupe that had never seen French theatre, for directing the reading sessions and teaching the art of reciting French verse at her school.
