Jeanne Louise Genet, Madame CAMPAN (1752–1822). Letter from the author, [Saint-Germain-en-Laye], 6 Messidor XI (25 June 1803), to M. de Mackau; 2 pages, quarto size, address with postmark, stamp of the F. Nasse collection (enclosed engraved portrait).
A lovely letter to ‘Anette’s dear Papa’.
She will listen to Mr Tessier and have her pupils listen to him too, but she adds mischievously: ‘I am indebted to Mlle Genet, formerly a reader to the Daughters of France and now performing the same duties for the Queen, and to Maître Campan, who was able to whistle the tragedy of Esther to a small troupe that had never seen French theatre, for directing the reading sessions and teaching the art of reciting French verse at her school. She is very fond of this Madame Campan, partly because the St Lamberts, the Thomases, the Barthe family, the Rochon de Chabannes and others have told her for many years that she reads prose and verse very beautifully, and largely because it amuses her immensely’...
