Jeanne Louise Genet, Madame CAMPAN (1752–1822). Autograph letter, from Les Eaux-de-Bade in Switzerland, 14 July 1821, to a priest; 4 pages, in-8. Following the death of her son (26 January). She informs the abbot of this death, praising all the virtues of her son, whose health had frequently been a cause of concern to her… “He did not have the strength to withstand an inflammatory catarrh which took his life within six days”. She herself had been suffering from a swollen gland in her left breast, which ‘gave rise to fears that this might be the onset of the most painful of all women’s ailments’. She was therefore sent to Baden as much for her health as to take her mind off things, but Switzerland held little charm for her… ‘All these undulating landscapes, these ravines, these valleys [...] the torrents, the lakes – they do not make me long for the banks of the Seine any less. Here, nature reigns supreme’... She admits to being afraid of the steep roads, she who is accustomed only to strolling along the paths of a garden or a park. She will not settle in Paris and will end her life in her retreat: ‘I’ve had enough of courts, society, and men in droves, whatever their colours’...
