On the stretcher, an old handwritten note: “This painting by G. Courbet, executed in 1869, was given by him to his friend Perrier, a veteran of the Paris Commune. It was subsequently sold to Mr Lafond, former director of the Geneva prisons. It comes from his collection.”
Enclosed is a handwritten letter dated 1 November 1912 addressed to Mr Gaillet, an art dealer in Geneva, from L. Lafond, son of the aforementioned: “The paintings by Gustave Courbet which I have entrusted to you for sale come from the estate of my father, Mr Lafond, Director of Prisons in Geneva. He had acquired them from Mr Perrier, a prominent art dealer in Geneva and a personal friend of the painter Courbet, who had given them to him free of charge, which indicates that they have never been offered for sale. That is all I can say regarding these two works, the authenticity of which is absolutely beyond dispute. Please accept, Sir, my most earnest regards, L. Lafond”.
These two references appear to refer to Jules Perrier (1837–1904), a textile merchant, anarchist activist and former member of the Paris Commune. Exiled to Geneva, just like Gustave Courbet, following the events of the Paris Commune, he became a fervent bibliophile and a great art collector. His personal collection comprised nearly 960 items, including twelve works by Gustave Courbet.
