Description
Philippe DRUILLET Salammbô - Chapter 1 India ink and gouache for plate 48 of this album published in 1980 by Humanoïdes Associés. Signed. Accompanied by the colouring. "Dragons of the sands, devastators of crops and killers of cattle". Based on the work by Gustave Flaubert, this plate featured in the exhibition "Art and Innovation in European Comics" organised by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent in 1987. Framed. 89.3 x 68.6 cm. In connection with his version of Salammbô, Philippe Druillet expressed his admiration for David Lean's film Lawrence of Arabia. There is a link with T. E. Lawrence that should be recalled, and which underlines the man of letters that he was: he knew French literature, and Gustave Flaubert was one of his favourite authors - Salammbô made a strong impression on him. It is perhaps the battle scenes - the merciless confrontation between the Carthaginians and the mercenaries, the deafening roar, the violence and the spectacular chaos that accompany it and that Druillet translates so wonderfully - and beyond that the concept of total war, which aims to annihilate the enemy forces (either on the ground or through exhaustion), that ultimately bring them together.
