The reverse bears a sheet of paper with the following annotation: ‘Bears on the reverse a sheet of paper glued and annotated: “Raphael, Raffaello Sanzio, born in Urbino… Virgin with an inscription on cedar”. Height: 104 – width: 84.
The painting bears a sheet glued to the reverse and annotated: ‘The painting was viewed and admired by the great painter Ingres in 1892; this work made such a profound impression on him that he could not help but say, “He is our great master, and when one works, one must do so with reverence.”’
Previous provenance: Collection of the Prince of Rohan, then sold at public auction on 13 June 1978 by Tajan
Note and reference: The painting depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus, to whom the young Saint John the Baptist is holding out a scroll bearing the words ‘Agnus Dei’ (Lamb of God), under the gaze of Saint Joseph. The original is held at the Prado Museum in Madrid
