18th-century French school, circle of Pierre Gobert Portrait said to be of Marie Anne Antoinette de Mesmes (1696–1767), wife of Guy de Durfort, Duke of Lorges Canvas Height: 145 cm Width: 114 cm Bears the inscription in the lower left-hand corner: ‘Marie Anne Antoinette de Mesmes, wife of Guy de Durfort: Duke of Lorges.’ It also bears, on the left, the combined coat of arms of the de Mesmes and de Lorges families; it bears a recent inscription on the reverse of the stretcher: ‘purchased at the Château de Quintin in 1881’ Contemporary Louis XIV frame, re-gilded Previous restorations and damage (the format has been altered several times) Provenance: Château de Quintin collection, in 1881 (according to the inscription on the reverse). Marie-Anne-Antoinette de Mesmes married Guy-Nicolas de Durfort, Duke of Lorges and Quintin, in 1720. She thus became Duchess of Quintin and lady-in-waiting to the Duchess of Orléans.
