Description
Jean-Julien LEMORDANT (1878–1968)
Stranded boat – ‘Le Va et Vient’
Pastel, signed lower right
As seen: 51 x 73 cm
Notes: On 6 January 1912, according to newspaper articles reporting the shipwreck, Lemordant, a strong swimmer, personally carried the rope that enabled the sailors to leave the ship that had run aground near Penmarc’h. Following this maritime incident, the painter produced several works to immortalise it. A watercolour on the same subject is also known to exist. This important work by the painter hung in the entrance hall of the Parisian flat of Mrs Naudet-Cazenavette, the heir to the painter’s estate.
