Description
Part of an imperial tableware service in Sèvres porcelain from Emperor Napoleon I’s ‘ordinary’ service at the Tuileries Three hard-paste porcelain soup plates, with a beautiful blue base, the rim decorated with a frieze of leafy garlands entwined with gold ribbons, the centre adorned with a rosette of gold palmettes, and the rim edged with a frieze of gold laurel leaves. A piece from Emperor Napoleon I’s “ordinary” service at the Tuileries Imperial Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory, 1812 Diameter: 23.5 cm Good condition, with a small chip to the gilding The decoration of this service, previously unrecorded in the Sèvres archives, is described as ‘beautiful blue ground, gold frieze’ with no further details which would, however, have been extremely useful in distinguishing the gold frieze from other services with a beautiful blue ground, notably that of Fontainebleau (see the Amis de Sèvres lecture, 1 February 2021, ‘Empire-period services at Sèvres: latest discoveries’, by Maxime Charron). The first order was placed on 24 August 1808 (Archives of the Cité de la Céramique, Sèvres, Vu1, f°61 v°) but was delivered on 20 August 1808 to the Tuileries (Vbb2, f°65 v°). Numerous restocking orders followed each year – sometimes several per year – to replace lost or broken items. For example, on 18 January 1812, the following items were delivered to the Tuileries Palace to replace lost pieces from the Emperor’s Ordinary Service: 4 soup plates (at 25 francs each) with a beautiful blue background and a gold frieze (Vtt1, f°168). As a reminder, our service was the third to be placed on the imperial table at the Tuileries Palace, following: 1) the service with a tortoiseshell-effect background and bronze-like figures, delivered to the Tuileries on 13 and 14 Frimaire, Year 13 (4 and 5 December 1804) to His Majesty the Emperor; 2) the ‘Olympic’ service, which entered the manufactory’s sales warehouse on 31 December 1806, and subsequently intended to be used “for the celebrations to be held on the occasion of the marriage of Her Highness the Princess of Württemberg”, delivered “on behalf of the Emperor to the Tuileries Palace” on 21 August 1807, used the following day on the occasion of the marriage of Jérôme, Napoleon’s brother and King of Westphalia, to Catherine of Württemberg, and finally presented as a gift to Tsar Alexander I of Russia on 14 February 1808; 3) this service, which might be called the ‘festoon’ service; 4) the ‘private’ service, delivered on 27 March 1810 on behalf of the Emperor at the Tuileries.
