DE SALOGNAC DE LA MOTTE FENELON’; the rim has a lapis blue background adorned with gold fleurons. Louis-Philippe period, 1831. Diameter: 24 cm This plate comes from the service whose decoration is described as ‘lapis blue ground with a gold and platinum frieze, portraits of famous French figures painted in the cameo style ’, which entered the manufactory’s sales warehouse on 5 November 1831 and was delivered to the Count de la Ferronnaye on 15 December 1831, following fresh authorisation from the provisional administrator [of the former Crown endowment]. The service comprised 160 pieces, including 96 plates (Sèvres Archives, Vbb8 fol. f° 32). Pierre-Louis-Auguste Ferron, Count of La Ferronnays (1777–1842), an émigré and aide-de-camp to the Duke of Berry, served as a Peer of France during the Restoration, as ambassador to Denmark and then to Russia, and as Minister for Foreign Affairs (1828–1829). Appointed ambassador to the Holy See, he refused to swear allegiance to Louis-Philippe in 1830. Commissioned under Charles X, this gift was not presented to him until after the fall of the elder branch of the royal family. Expert: Mr Cyril Froissart
