Description
MAISON DUVINAGE and MAISON ALPHONSE GIROUX. Rare table mirror simulating an unfolded fan in precious wood and metal marquetry on an ivory base, the body finished with an ormolu rosette motif and resting on an articulated cut-out easel holding a bevelled mirror. Rich inlaid decoration lined with dark reserves of plant motifs and acanthus bases at the top, the plumes animated by foliage falls with berries, the right-hand plume with an applied MB monogram, the strands adorned with a bird with outstretched wings on a mound chasing a dragonfly against a background of flowering stems and berries. Signed "FD Bté" in the decoration, easel signed "Mon Alph Giroux Paris". Circa 1870-1880. Chips, small accidents, one screw on the back, pitted sheen. 32 x 56 x 3 cm. CIC in the course of obtaining. In 1867, Pierre-Ferdinand Duvinage took over the Giroux company, founded in 1799 and renowned for the excellence of its production. His widow succeeded him in 1876 and continued to pass on her husband's expertise, in particular the technique of cloisonné ivory, for which he registered a patent in 1874, described as "the combined use of ivory as a base, wood, stained or exotic, for designs or ornaments and copper or another metal to cloisonné the ivory fragments". Following the fashion of the time, the House of Duvinage distinguished itself with a Japanese-style production, of which our fan is the perfect synthesis: the form, of course, first and foremost, then the decoration, with this dragonfly and this exotic bird, and above all the technique and materials, with the ingenious use of metal partitions forming the very strands of the fan, darkened with ivory, a material that could not be more Far Eastern... In the spirit of total art, substance meets form, creating an objet d'art that subtly blends foreign sources with Western technical know-how.
