Description
MADELINE Paul (1863–1920): ‘Moulin de la folie à Crozant’, HST, unsigned and dated (19)16. Dimensions: 57 x 70.5 cm.
George Sand (1804–1876) enjoyed walking in the Creuse valleys around Fresselines and Crozant. She would refer to them in several of her novels. In 1857, Alexandre Manceau presented her with a small house in Gargilesse-Dampierre, about ten kilometres from Crozant, where she would spend many holidays. From then on, many painters began to visit the area, and by 1864 the name ‘Crozant School of Painters’ had come into use.
The Moulin de la Folie also inspired several leading figures of this School, such as Henri Pailler, Eugène Alluaud, Julien Féron, Armand Guillaumin, Léon Detroy and Paul Madeline.
