Description
JADIN Louis Godefroy (1805–1882), attributed to: ‘Group of Dogs from Virelade’, a major oil on canvas in its period frame (original exhibition label on the back). Dimensions: 99 x 130 cm. The painter notably exhibited a painting entitled ‘Twelve Dogs, Virelade Group’ at the 1864 Salon, which was praised by the critic Louis Auvray. In 1851, Count Joseph de Carayon-Latour, a master huntsman, developed this famous breed of dogs on his estates and in his kennels at the Château de Virelade; the breed was the result of a cross between Saintonge hounds and the last ‘Bleus de Gascogne’ belonging to the Baron de Ruble. This type of hunting portrait was highly prized by the aristocracy, influenced by the English painters Sir Edwin Landseer (1802–1873) and Johns Emms (1843–1912). Provenance: an aristocratic family from Bordeaux related by marriage to the Carayon-Latour family.
