Description
Gilded bronze wall sconce based on a design by the Parisian bronze-smith Jean-Joseph de SAINT-GERMAIN (1719–1791), with a dynamic form featuring rocaille decoration comprising clasps, foliage, cascading flowers and openwork grilles adorned with fleurons, surmounted by a cherub beneath a basket; the dial is white enamelled with Arabic and Roman numerals and a railway-track minute track, marked ‘L. RIOLLE à Dieppe’. Movement signed AGERON in PARIS (signs of wear, missing parts of the decoration, drill holes). In the Louis XV style, with an 18th-century base that was altered and further decorated in the 19th century. Height: 81 cm. The master clockmaker Riolle was active in Dieppe in the late 18th century and during the Directoire. The master clockmaker François Ageron was admitted to the guild in Paris in 1741.
