WILLIAM BATES, PHILIPP ELLIOT & Co: A MAJOR SET of 171 pieces in fine earthenware with a neo-classical Etruscan decoration in shades of ochre and brown with copper-coloured lustre highlights, ‘Etruscan vases’ pattern, adorned with friezes of posts, interlacing, rosettes, palmettes in cartouches, oves, and entablatures upon which rest crater vases, lekythoi, bowls and oenochoae. Comprising: 1 lidded vegetable dish (H 19 cm, W 33 cm), 1 tall display stand (H 19.5 cm, D 28.5 cm), 1 sauce boat (H 10.5 cm, W 24 cm), 2 soup tureens (H 19 cm, W 22 cm), 2 oval dishes (W 36 and 42 cm), 7 deep dishes (Diam. 24.5, 28 (3), 30, 31 and 33.5 cm), 1 serving dish (Diameter 24 cm), 64 small plates (Diameter 20.5 cm), 69 medium plates (Diameter 22.5 cm), 23 soup plates (diameter 22.5 cm) (in very good condition, some natural hairline cracks, tiny chips on one oval dish and four plates, a small chip on six plates, one plate with a hairline crack, one soup tureen with a restored lid). Signed with several marks. ENGLAND, Staffordshire, Burslem, 1870–1875.
