Description
EUCHARISTIC or DEVOTIONAL PLAQUE in cast bronze or brass, in low relief, gilded with ground gold and very finely chiselled, depicting Christ on the Cross flanked by the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene, (remnants of mounting on the reverse, in very fine condition, with minor wear to the gilding). A late Renaissance work, from Northern Italy or Flanders, late 16th or early 17th century. Dimensions: 31.2 x 24.6 cm. Weight: 3,280 g. This panel, which may have been part of an altarpiece, is remarkable for its quality, particularly in the details of the hair and drapery, and the grènetis-style engraving of the clouds, the cross and the garments. The titulus is inscribed with ‘INRI’ in Hebrew, Greek and Latin characters. This work is comparable to that of Guglielmo della Porta (1515–1577) or Sebastiano Torrigiani and their workshops, which were active in Rome.
