Description
SENELLE Jean (?1605–1671): ‘Saint Martin, a seminarian, receiving the tonsure’, HSP (stains, separate panels). Part of a series held at the Musée Épiscopal Bossuet in Meaux. Dimensions: 59 x 84 cm. Provenance: Commissioned by Canon Martin Le Marinel for the Saint Martin Chapel in the cathedral. Our painting completes the cycle *The Life of Saint Martin*, four paintings from which are held at the Bossuet Museum in Meaux (*Saint Martin Ordained as a Deacon*, *Saint Martin Ordained as a Priest*, *Saint Martin Consecrated as a Bishop*, *The Mass of Saint Martin*). The altarpiece, *The Resurrection of the Catechumen*, has yet to be found (see the catalogue of the exhibition *Jean Senelle 1605–before 1671*, Meaux, Bossuet Museum, Dec 1997–March 1998, p. 94). We would like to thank Mr Sylvain Kerspern, curatorial director of the 1997–1998 exhibition, for confirming the attribution to us. He dates the cycle to around 1645–1647 and points out that our painting “may be the subject of the remark by Jean-Baptiste-Marie Pierre, who notes that works by Senelle had been sought out in Meaux from Meaux to pass them off as works by Le Sueur, as this panel appears to have been removed from the panelling Expert: Cabinet Eric Turquin – Paris, Ms Philippine Motais de Narbonne.
