REVOLUTION Fragments of revolutionary wallpaper depicting a lictor’s fasces surrounded by tricolour ribbons bearing the inscription “Let us be united, we shall be invincible”; a second fragment featuring laurel wreaths linked by tricolour ribbons framing a flag surmounted by a Phrygian cap bears the inscription: "French Republic"; on the tablets of the law, the words: "Liberty, Equality". 59 x 46 cm In a frame. Handwritten inscription on card stock: “Wallpaper from the Revolutionary era, found in the Tuileries on the second floor of the Pavillon de Flore, demolished in 1861. Three panels were covered with the same paper. Several layers of paper covered this one. (Donated by Mr Pitre, architect of the Imperial Palaces, to his friend Mr Peyron) A fragment from the same source was exhibited at the Carnavalet Museum in 1931 at the ‘Paris & the Revolution’ exhibition under catalogue number 468” (Stain and small tears) Our thanks to the Carnavalet Museum for confirming the presence of a similar fragment in their collection under inventory number PP8
