FRIANT, Emile (1863–1932), Young Mother and Her Child by the Sea near Algiers, 1890, oil on panel, signed lower right and dated 90. 37.7 × 56 cm.
Our painting was exhibited at the Emile Friant retrospective at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nancy in 1988, and is featured on page 66 of the exhibition catalogue.
Following the 1889 Salon, Friant was awarded a grant and returned to North Africa in 1890, and again in 1892. Thus, the year 1890 marked his first trip to Algeria, where he drew inspiration for his Orientalist work from his sketchbooks, landscapes and portraits. “He scarcely left Algiers and its surroundings that year”. [Bibliography: *Friant* by Henri Claude, published by Serge Domini, 2005]
Origin of the painting: the current owner acquired this painting from Armand Guidat’s godson over 40 years ago. Émile Friant was one of Armand Guidat’s mentors and teachers.
