Description
Hermann LINDENSCHMIT (Frankfurt am Main 1857–1939 Munich). Gothic room or drawing room, with a stove, 1890. Oil on canvas mounted on board, signed lower right. Countersigned, titled ‘Gothische Stube in Grins’ (Gothic Room in Grins, Austria) and dated 1890 on the reverse. 35 x 48 cm.
In 1913, he was awarded the gold medal at the Munich International Art Exhibition, where he exhibited the paintings “Der Antiquar” and “Gotische Stube”, which is probably the work we are offering here.
Hermann Lindenschmit was a German artist who made his name as a genre painter. He was the son of the painter Wilhelm Lindenschmit the Younger and the grandson of the archaeologist and artist Ludwig Lindenschmit the Elder. His career unfolded mainly in Munich, where he became a member of the local artists’ cooperative. He first honed his craft as a pupil of his own father, then perfected his technique at the Munich Academy under the tutelage of the masters Alexander Strähuber and Wilhelm von Löfftz. Rather than pursuing a career in history painting, he specialised in intimate and meticulous works. His paintings frequently explore scenes from everyday life, often depicting peasant families or farm interiors typical of Upper Bavaria. He also developed great skill in painting rich historical settings, such as Renaissance-era salons with carved furniture, as well as Baroque church interiors with sombre atmospheres, brought to life by the presence of young choirboys or monks. He is also known for his portraits and figure studies.
