Estimate €4,000 - €5,000
Description
THE CHARITY OF SAINT MARTIN OF TOURS A carved stone group depicting the saint in armour covered by a wide cloak; he holds the reins of his horse in his right hand and his sword in his left, with a beggar at his side, his face turned towards him, leaning on a gnarled crutch. 16th century. Dimensions: 87 x 70 x 30 cm Signs of wear and losses (including the sword and the beggar’s leg); the horse’s head and forelegs have been restored. Provenance: Private collection in Paris. Notes: The hagiography of the saint, Sulpicius Severus, tells us that whilst stationed in Gaul, at Amiens, one winter’s evening in 334, the 18-year-old legionnaire Martin shared his military cloak (the chlamys, made from a single rectangular piece of wool) with a destitute man shivering with cold, as the man had already run out of pay after generously distributing all his money to the needy. The following night, Christ appeared to him in a dream, clad in that very same piece of cloak. The remainder of his cloak, known as the ‘cape’, was later placed for the veneration of the faithful in a room whose name would subsequently give rise to the word ‘chapel’.
