Giovan Pietro Rizzoli, known as GIAMPIETRINO (active in Milan c. 1495–1540), workshop of Madonna and Child with an Apple, known as the Madonna della mela On the reverse, a sketch of a head, wax seals Oil on panel, two reinforcing keys (restorations, wear and tear) 54 x 40 cm Giampietrino’s ‘Madonna with the Apple’ enjoyed considerable success; we know of nine autograph versions, each featuring variations in the landscape, the Child’s pose or the Virgin’s veil. We can compare our painting with the ‘Virgin and Child’ held at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan (see the catalogue of the Museo d’Arte Antica del Castello Sforzesco, Volume 1, Milan, 1997, no. 207, reprinted on p. 307); the dimensions of the panel (53 x 40 cm) are comparable to our own
