Description
Patrice CADIOU (1947–2015). “Cavalier”. Sculpture with a wire frame interwoven with strips of brown patinated leather, resting on a rectangular base of patinated wood edged with leather and encircled by a patinated leather belt. Plaque bearing the artist’s name in the bottom left-hand corner. (Dimensions: 80 x 65 x 30 cm) “Patrice Cadiou (France, 1947–2015) was a ballet dancer turned sculptor, renowned for his sombre and enigmatic works created from materials found in rubbish tips near his home. His sculptures are reminiscent of the Kongo’s nail fetishes, imbued with a profound mysticism and symbolism. Cadiou sought to understand and reveal the hidden message in his sculptures, stating: “When one of my sculptures has not yet conveyed its message, when it does not yet speak to me, I seek to listen to it, to modify it so that it reveals its full secret to me” (Centre d’art contemporain de l’abbaye d’Auberive, *Esprit singulier: fonds de l’abbaye d’Auberive*, published by Flammarion: Paris, 2016, p. 102). Cadiou’s artistic career took a decisive turn following his meeting with the art dealer Gérard Laubie, which led to exhibitions at Raymond Cordier, the Keller Gallery, the Ridel Gallery, and the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris. Jean-Claude Volot, a collector of contemporary art and mayor of Auberive, played a crucial role in Cadiou’s career. He collected his works and encouraged him to settle in Haute-Marne, at the contemporary art centre at Auberive Abbey, where some of his creations were exhibited.” (Source: Website of the Galerie Les Yeux Fertiles)
