Description
Borghild ARNESEN (1872–1950). A silver-plated jug with a high neck; the body is decorated with stylised flamingos and frogs. The neck is adorned with a band of chiselled flowers. Monogrammed beneath the base and dated 1904. H: 32 – Diam: 17 cm. Dents and slight loss of silver plating. The Norwegian-born artist Borghild Arnesen is one of the leading figures of the Haute-Claire workshop in La Marlotte and Armand POINT’s group. She trained in drawing and painting in the late 19th century under Harriet Backer and Asta Nørregaard, before leaving Norway for Paris. A trip to Rome in 1898 introduced her to the metalworking arts. In 1899, she joined the Haute-Claire artists’ colony founded by Armand Point. Working in repoussé and chiselled copper, Borghild Arnesen created numerous works, in which motifs of flora and fauna feature prominently. Nature, flowers and animals inspired her work. However, it was not the direct reproduction of these motifs that interested the artist. Through her contact with the Symbolist group at La Marlotte, magic, the fantastical and mystery became integral to her works. Borghild Arnesen enjoyed a degree of success during her lifetime, notably thanks to her frequent participation in art exhibitions in the early 20th century. The artist sold most of her works in France, as well as to a few Norwegian collectors. Provenance: Former DEMELETTE collection.
