Jean RIVIERE (1853-1922) "Theodora, Florentine medallion". Patinated and polychrome plaster proof (minor restorations to the beak and side scrolls, small loss to a point on the right side of the headdress), on a wood and velvet panel, 95 x 60 cm. History: A similar model is in the collections of the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse (inventory number 2018-6-1). A "Théodora" medallion was presented by the artist at the Union Artistique de Toulouse in 1891 under number 641. The majority of known works representing Théodora by Jean Rivière do not have their headdress ornamented with the eagle as here in our model, very often the claws can be sketched but not the entire animal, which makes our piece very atypical and unique.
