Description
BAMANA/BAMBARA, Mali.
Hardwood, dark patina.
Ciwara" zoomorphic crest mask linked to agrarian festivities for the fertilisation of the earth and representing a female antelope carrying her fawn on her back, in a symbolic gesture.
The quality of the carving here is remarkable, with long twisted horns, faces boldly carved with geometric motifs and a perfectly balanced juxtaposition of mother and child.
First half 20th century.
104x28 cm.
Note: "This "Ciwara" society, whose name means "Champion of Crops", taught its members not only how to grow each plant, but also the need for collective agricultural work to ensure harvests. The dances were linked to agrarian rites and, consequently, to the idea of fertility, fecundity and sowing".
