KUBA Kingdom, Democratic Republic of Congo. Wood, copper, beads, cowrie shells, raffia fibres, animal skins. Kuba mythology revolves around three characters, each represented by a mask: Woot, the creator and founder of the reigning dynasty; Woot's wife; and Bwoom. The 'Bwoom' helm-mask, linked to the royal court, embodies a subversive force. It is often danced in conflict with the masked figure Woot. First half 20th century. 32x24 cm. Depth 40 cm.
