Description
MAORI, New Zealand.
A rare ‘kōtiate parāoa’, a short club made from the bone of a marine mammal, reserved for chiefs and high-ranking warriors.
Its pommel is carved with a tiki figure executed with great skill, whilst the handle is perforated to accommodate a wrist strap.
The flattened blade has an anthropomorphic shape with broad, balanced curves, featuring curved notches on the sides – a characteristic feature of kōtiate. Its form, of remarkable sculptural elegance, is reminiscent of a violin.
31.8 x 14 cm.
This object, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, comes from a collection in Nantes and was acquired in Brittany over thirty years ago.
It is an antique artistic/utility object corresponding to the concept of a ‘crafted specimen’.
To take this item out of the EU, a CITES re-export certificate will be required, at the buyer’s expense.
