Description
MARQUISAS ISLANDS, Polynesia. A pair of ‘Pu Taiana’ ear ornaments made from marine mammal bone, worn mainly by men of high rank of a certain age, and occasionally by women. Pu Taiana come in various forms; ours are characterised by a cylindrical cross-section with a single hole, one end of which is finished with a miniature Tiki. Length: 4 cm. This object, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, comes from a collection in Nantes and was acquired in Brittany over thirty years ago. It is an antique artistic/utilitarian object corresponding to the concept of a ‘worked specimen’. To take this item out of the EU, a CITES re-export certificate will be required, at the buyer’s expense. Expert: Christian NJIENSI
