Édouard Charles HUGOT (1815–?). The Adventures of Candide and Cacambo in the Land of Eldorado. Panoramic oil on canvas, signed and dated 1858 at the bottom centre, with the title at the top in a scroll held by cherubs. 40 x 131 cm. (damage and restoration). Note: In Voltaire’s novella *Candide* (chapters 17 and 18), Candide and his servant Cacambo miraculously arrive in Eldorado, a hidden, ideal kingdom where gold and precious stones litter the ground, where peace, equality, religious freedom and science, and from which they set off again laden with rich sheep to ransom Cunégonde. Here, the artist depicts, within a single panoramic scene, various moments from Candide’s adventure.
