Description
A rare small oratory from a private chapel, carved from wood and gilded. Square in plan, the façade features two twisted columns supporting a pediment adorned with foliage, surmounted by a flower-adorned, winged putto’s head, with broad volutes of acanthus leaves on the sides. Inside, a niche houses a statuette of the Black Virgin of Le Puy, richly dressed against a leaf motif, framed by cascading foliage with winged putto heads in high relief. Le Puy, 17th century; height: 37 cm, width: 44 cm, depth: 13 cm (slight touch-ups to the gilding, minor chips; otherwise in fine condition).
Bibliography: Iconography of the Black Virgin of Le Puy, Saint-Jean Baptistery, 1983. Comparable to the oratory of the Black Virgin of Le Puy at the Monastery of Sainte-Claire, illustrated on the cover of the catalogue.
