In-12, red half-maroquin with corner pieces, spine with five raised bands, gilt title, date at the foot, gilt head, cover and spine preserved, untrimmed (Moscovitz). First commercial edition (following the pre-original version serialised in *Gil Blas* in 1883 and the off-print not released for sale produced in the same year, which therefore constitutes the true original). Copy no. 15 of 150 on Holland paper, enhanced with an unsigned ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR (anti-Semitic caricature) and a handwritten letter from the author, Médan, 7 November 1883, 1 page and 2 lines, 8vo (concerning the further delay in the publication of Sarah Bernhardt’s memoirs and the forthcoming publication of *La Joie de Vivre* in *Gil Blas*).
