Description
[AMERICANA] 19th century. Reunion of two works relating to South America. - MARCOY (Paul). Voyage à travers l'Amérique du Sud de l'océan Pacifique à l'océan Atlantique. Paris, Hachette, 1869. 2 strong vol. in-4 (33,2 x 24,5 cm), half fir green chagrin, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt title (contemporary binding). First edition of this work, which first appeared in Hachette's magazine Le Tour du Monde from 1862 to 1867 in the form of articles. The work is decorated with 626 engravings in the text, some of which are full-page, and 20 woodcut maps by Edouard Riou, a leading travel illustrator. Paul Marcoy's Voyage à travers l'Amérique du Sud (Journey through South America) was one of the most popular travel and exploration books of the 19th century. The book records the observations of fifteen years of travel in the 1840s, from Peru to the mouth of the Amazon. The narrative offers detailed descriptions of landscapes, ethnic groups, traditions, botany, etc., accompanied by rich illustrations. A fine copy, with slightly worn headpieces. Provenance E. J. (ex-libris). Bibliography Sabin, 44507. Daoulas. Travel literature and portraits of women in Paul Marcoy and Flora Tristan (Peru). Travaux & documents, Université de La Réunion, Faculté des lettres et des sciences humaines, 2018, p. 31-62. - ISABELLE (Arsène). Journey to Buenos Aires and Porto Alegre. Le Havre, J. Morlent, 1835. Gr. in-8 (22,8 x 15 cm), brown half-basin, smooth spine decorated (Messier). Very rare first edition, with 3 (of 4) lithographed hors-texts by Formentin et Cie (including the frontispiece), and a folding map lithographed by Bernard. A passionate traveller, Arsène Isabelle was a fervent fan of exploration stories. Inspired in particular by emblematic works of travel literature such as Dumont d'Urville's Voyage pittoresque, Arsène Isabelle decided to set sail for South America in 1830, driven by a great curiosity about the New World. Arriving in Buenos Aires in the midst of the revolutionary period, he travelled the length and breadth of the continent, gathering invaluable information at the end of his journey - on its people, customs and habits, as well as on French trade with the continent and its methods - which is published in this book, along with a number of illustrations. Mottling throughout, heavy foxing particularly on the title page and map, some scratches on the covers. Bibliography Sabin, 35239. Borba de Moraes, I, 355.
