Description
[AMERICANA] 18th century. Reunion of two works relating to the history of America. - ROUSSELOT de SURGY]. Histoire naturelle et politique de la Pennsylvanie, et de l'établissement des Quakers dans cette contrée. Paris, Ganeau, 1768. In-12 (16,5 × 9,4 cm), marbled havana calf, smooth spine decorated, gilt title (contemporary binding). First edition of the French translation, illustrated with a copper-engraved fold-out map. The work is based on the natural history works of Pehr Kalm published between 1753 and 1761 and on Gottlieb Mittelberger's voyage to Pennsylvania, published in 1756. Rousselot recounts the history of the state of Pennsylvania through a detailed description of its fauna, flora and geological formations, as well as its political system, customs and population, and the establishment of the Quakers in the region. A fine copy, despite dull corners. Bibliography Sabin, 73490 - CITRY de LA GUETTE], SOTO (Ferdinand de). History of the conquest of Florida, by the Spaniards, under Ferdinand de Soto. [Paris, Denys Thierry, 1685]. In-12 (16 × 9 cm), havana calf, ornate ribbed spine, red morocco title-piece, gilt title (contemporary binding). First edition of the French translation. Between 1539 and 1543, Hernando de Soto, a Spanish conquistador, undertook an expedition to the south-east of what is now the United States - a region still little known to Europeans at the time - and was one of the pioneers of Florida exploration, alongside Juan Ponce de Léon and Panfilo de Narvaez. The work is set against the backdrop of the first attempts to conquer the south-eastern regions of what is now the United States. It is a primary historical source of European exploration of the New World, and provides a first-rate account of Spanish ambitions for conquest. The story of this exploration was first published in 1556, written by a "gentleman from the town of Elvas". It was from this text that the first French edition appeared (1685, published by Denys Thierry), translated from Portuguese by Citry de la Guette. This copy contains 3 copper-engraved plates, including a fold-out frontispiece showing a view of "La ville de Gegery", a scene depicting the "Election of the King of Congo", and the "Iagos" people. Our copy does not include the edition information, as the lower part of the title page has been restored. However, we believe that this is the first edition of the French translation, as a comparison with other digitised copies shows that the title page has the same typography, title vignette and translator. Corners dulled, jaw of second board partially split, title leaf restored in lower part, some stains on first board, nerves worn. Bibliography Sabin, 24864. Leclerc, 907.
