Reunion of four travel books on North America.
- CREVE-CŒUR (Michel-Guillaume-Jean). Lettres d'un cultivateur américain adressées à W. S. Paris, Cuchet, 1787. 3 vol. in-8 (21 x 14 cm), paperback, covers muted.
Second edition of the French translation of this work published in English in 1782 in London under the title Letters from an American farmer.
The work is decorated with a copper-engraved frontispiece, 4 fold-out maps and a title vignette for each volume.
An important work belonging to the classics of literature on America. Presented in the form of travelogues, the Lettres offer an interesting description of 18th-century America, at the time of Independence, and whose narrative contributed greatly to the construction of an idealised image of this continent in the West.
Second cover of volume I missing, first cover of volume II detached, first cover of volume III with tears, spotting on the head of pages of volume 1, tear with loss in the lower margin of page 164 of volume 1, second map of volume 2 with tear without loss, pages 145 to 160 of the second volume wet, pages of the last quire Oo pierced without affecting reading.
- WARDEN (D. B.).
First edition of the French translation of this work, published in 1819 in its original version, offering an exhaustive description of the American states through the prism of their history, topography, flora and fauna, legislation, customs, trade and industry...
The work is complete with a fold-out frontispiece, two large copper-engraved fold-out maps and two hors-texte plates.
Some foxing, notably on the frontispiece.
Provenance
Blue heraldic wetstamp on the false titles.
- PRIEST (William). Travels in the united states of America; commencing in the year 1793, and ending with the author's journals of his two voyages across the Atlantic. London, J. Johnson, 1802. 1 vol. in-8 (22,5 x 14 cm), boards in blue paper.
First edition of this travel account, reporting experiences and observations of America at the end of the 18th century. The work is decorated with a coloured copper-engraved frontispiece by the engraver Benjamin Smith.
Spine rubbed, small brown spots, title page browned.
- LE BEAU (Claude), Aventures du Sieur C. Le Beau [...] ou voyage dans l'Amérique Septentrionale [...]. Amsterdam, Herman Uytwerf, 1738. 2 vol. in-12 (15,6 x 9,2 cm) speckled calf, smooth spine, red morocco title-piece (contemporary binding).
First edition illustrated with a map and 5 copper-engraved fold-out hors-texts. The author describes, in the guise of a travelogue and adventure novel, his stay in Canada during which he made observations on the indigenous Huron and Iroquois peoples, which he relates in this work.
Pages 162, 163, 166, 167, 170, 171, 174, 175 unprinted, a few wormholes, tear without missing p. 3 and on the plate p. 182, p. 312 map partially detached.
