Description
[AMERICANA] Philadelphia, Paris, Ph.-D. Pierres, Pissot, 1783. Constitutions of the thirteen United States of America. In-8 (19.7 × 12.3 cm), half marbled morocco, ornate ribbed spine, red title page, red edges (modern binding). Original French edition, published by Benjamin Franklin and translated by the Duc Louis-Alexandre de La Rochefoucauld, who presented the work to the Assemblée nationale. It contains the constitutions of the 13 independent states, the declaration of independence, the articles of confederation, the treaties of friendship and commerce between the United States, France and the Netherlands, and the treaty of possible and defensive alliance. This first edition bears, on the title page, the first appearance on a book of the American seal, drawn by B. Franklin and engraved on wood. The volume opens with an anonymous text, 116 p., without title page (Rotterdam, Bennet & Hake, 1781), Observations on a pamphlet entitled Lettres à gentilhomme. Written by the English general William Howe (1725-1814), this text comments on the famous pamphlet page by page, evoking the 1776-1778 campaign against Washington, the capture of Long Island and Philadelphia, the figures of the forces involved... and provides questions and answers from the "examinations" of the players in the conflict. Small hole in title and angular lack. Light spotting at head. Bibliography Leclerc, no. 854; Sabin, no. 16118.
