Description
[AMERICANA] - ROUSSIN (Baron Albin-Reine)
Paris, Imprimerie royale, Bordeaux, Fillastre frères, 1827.
The Pilot of Brazil, or description of the coasts of South America.
In-8 (23.8 × 15.4 cm), blue paste paper boards, red title page, entirely untrimmed (contemporary binding).
Rare first edition.
"Famous book of navigational bearings" (Borba de Moraes).
At the time of publication of this work, Roussin (1781-1854) had already published a work demonstrating his extensive knowledge of Brazil: Navigation aux côtes du Brésil (Paris, imprimerie nationale, 1821). Fillastre's address in Bordeaux is on a printed note pasted at the foot of the title page.
Minor discolouration to boards; partially uncut, very light foxing.
ATTACHED
MOLLIEN (Gaspard-Théodore). Voyage dans la république de Colombia, en 1823. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1824. 2 vol. in-8 (20 × 12,2 cm) half calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt and cold-stamped fillets, gilt initials at foot of spines (contemporary binding).
First edition.
Adorned with 8 copper-engraved aquatint figures hors texte and a large folded lithographed map.
"This work contains very interesting information on the War of Independence, Bolivar, Miranda, Morillo, the customs of the inhabitants, etc." (Chadenat). At the time of Mollien's journey, the Republic of Colombia had only been independent from Spain for 4 years.
Some foxing, nevertheless a pleasant copy.
