Charles Louis Joseph Bazoche (1784-1853) was a French naval officer. In 1801, he joined the Imperial Navy as a novice. He was wounded in the naval battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and then campaigned in the West Indies. He obtained several commands, including that of the 60-gun frigate Marie-Thérèse (captain 2nd class) in 1823, with which he carried out a long campaign on the coasts of South America, in Chile, Peru and Brazil until 1828.
He took part in the blockade of certain Mexican ports between 1837 and 1838. The following year, he was appointed Major of the Navy in Brest, before becoming Governor of Bourbon Island (now Reunion Island) in 1841.
A sketchbook by Charles Bazoche illustrating this expedition has been preserved by his descendants. We can assume that he, or another officer in his crew, may have produced the ethnographic sketches we are presenting here.
