Pet. in-4 (25,3 × 19,4 cm), scarlet morocco, framed with gilt fillets on the boards, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, green title page, gilt edges (contemporary binding, probably English).
First edition.
A rare work providing a complete description of French Guiana.
Title-frontispiece, 2 headpieces, 10 out-of-text figures (types, natural sciences, etc.), 20 maps and plans (including 9 folded), all engraved on copper.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), the Navy's first hydrographer, produced numerous maps of coasts and seas. In particular, he was responsible for all the maps accompanying Abbé Prévost's Histoire des voyages.
Very slight scattered foxing, otherwise a very fine copy in contemporary red morocco.
