The Inhabitants of Surinam. Notes collected at the Colonial Exhibition in Amsterdam in 1883.
Large folio (44 × 30.8 cm), green cloth boards, framed with cold filets, large gilt title on upper cover, spine decorated in the same way (publisher's boards).
First edition.
Lithographed frontispiece, 2 double-page lithographed maps in colour, 62 phototyped views and portraits and 13 lithographed plates in colour. The chromolithographs, based on drawings by Lewenstein, Prévost and Libonis, depict headdresses, ornaments, utensils and instruments.
"A luxury publication, printed in small numbers for private distribution [...]. [This work is the most important ever published (in French) on the anthropology and ethnography of Dutch Guyana" (Chadenat).
The business card of Prince Roland Bonaparte has been glued in duplicate to the first flyleaf.
A fine copy.
Boards very slightly rubbed. Small marginal tear not serious to a plate, 1 page detached, not missing.
