Rio de Janeiro, Healon e Rensburg [1842-1843]...
Rio de Janeiro pitoresco.
Oblong folio album (27.8 × 40 cm), aubergine half morocco, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets (period binding).
The first album of engravings printed in Brazil.
A handsome album of 12 lithographed plates by Louis Buvelot for the landscapes and Louis-Auguste Moreau for the figures. Each plate presents a set of scenes, except for two full-page plates with coloured backgrounds.
In 1844, the album was enriched with 6 new plates and a general title, which are missing here.
Louis-Auguste Moreaux (1817-1877) moved to Brazil in 1838, where he died after a successful career as an artist.
Louis Buvelot (1814-1888) moved to Brazil in 1835, where he remained until 1852. From 1865 he moved to Australia, where he died.
Together they founded a photographic studio, which became active in 1845, and obtained the title of Photographers to the Royal Household. The photographic studio, which became known as Officina Imperial Buvelot & Prat, operated until 1856.
Restoration to the paper on the second cover. Small tears repaired, some light foxing. The mounting tabs have been renewed.
