Journey in the interior of China and in Tartary, made in the years 1792, 1793, 1794.
5 vol. in-8 (21 × 13,7 cm) stapled, marbled paper covers and one vol. in-4 (30,1 × 20,8 cm), marbled paper boards, title label on upper board.
Second edition.
Complete atlas: frontispiece portrait of Macartney, 37 plates (including one map) and 3 large folded maps, all copper-engraved by Tardieu l'aîné.
Lord Macartney was appointed ambassador extraordinary to China in 1792. He embarked with the flotilla made up of the Lion, the Indostan and the Jackal. His account of the voyage provides precise information on the sciences, natural history and the customs and habits of the local people.
Text: 1st volume, first cover detached, second cover missing, other covers worn; a few ff. a little creased.
Atlas: spine missing, very small barely visible perforations to 5 plates, small tears to fold of folded maps. Fresh inside.
