In-4, (4) ff, 546 pp, (12) ff, paper a little yellowed, title window filled in without loss of text, 17th c. fawn calf, spine ribbed and ornamented, hinges and headpieces remain. CARTIER n° 616. BRUN 206. First edition. Title in a frame, numerous illustrations, one of them signed Pierre Cruche (Eskrich). Claude Guichard (1545-1607) also left two poetic works. He was secretary of state, maître des requêtes, then grand référendaire and historiographer of Savoy. He studied history and philosophy at the University of Turin, where he struck up a close friendship with another poet of the period, Antoine Favre. The dedication to Charles Emmanuel, Duke of Savoy, is printed in civil type. His descriptions of the funeral customs of all nations, including a section on those of North America, make it one of the first surveys of comparative ethnology. This copy belonged to the "Bibliotheca Colbertina" founded by the minister under the direction of Etienne Baluze. It was dispersed in 1728. Ex-libris Nicolas Quesnel dated 1598 (crossed out).
