MATER DOLOROSA
It was as he was leaving the Church of the Trinity, in late 1869, that Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux encountered his model “Jacintha” in tears. She had just lost her son. Deeply moved, the artist invited her to his studio in Auteuil, where, in the space of two hours, he modelled the sketch for one of his most important clay busts, which he would later refine.
This tragic work nevertheless contains an underlying sense of hope, which shines through in Jacintha’s expectant posture, her eyes turned towards the heavens, ready to live again. *La Mater Dolorosa* (sketch) is a perfect example of the artist’s virtuosity and recalls the expressive figures for which Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux displayed such talent whilst at the École des Beaux-Arts.
Whilst the sculptor was grappling with the scandal surrounding the ‘Danse de l’Opéra’, the publication of the work proceeded with great vigour, as he had already sent a copy in March 1870 to the Salon des Amis de la Ville de Bordeaux (now held at the city’s Musée des Beaux-Arts).
