Description
Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827–1875) Eve and the Serpent or Eve Tempted (May 1874) Bronze with a richly nuanced brown patina, Height: 68.8 cm, Length: 25.7 cm, Depth: 23.8 cm Early proof signed and dated “JB Carpeaux, 1874”, titled “Eve Tentée”, stamped with the Imperial Eagle. Artist’s edition, stamped “Propriété Carpeaux”, one of the rare proofs from this period produced during the artist’s lifetime. Circa: 1874 EVE TEMPTED “In 1874, whilst convalescing at the home of his friend, the painter Bruno Chérier, Carpeaux worked on a depiction of Eve under the spell of a seductive demon. To achieve this, he reinterpreted the figure of Chloe from his group sculpture *Daphnis and Chloe* (1873), revealing her complete nudity. Carpeaux’s grace is fully evident in the interplay of her moving hands and her seemingly static yet subtly swaying hips. The naked body of ‘the first woman’ is imbued with a great sense of modernity, set against the rigidity of this flowering tree trunk, which is not unlike the classicism of Renaissance-era models.
