EVE TEMPTED
“In 1874, whilst convalescing at the home of his friend, the painter Bruno Chérier, Carpeaux worked on a depiction of Eve under the spell of a seductive demon. To achieve this, he reinterpreted the figure of Chloe from his group sculpture *Daphnis and Chloe* (1873), revealing her in full nudity.
Carpeaux’s grace is fully evident in this interplay of moving hands and this deceptively static sway of the hips. The naked body of ‘the first woman’ exudes a profound modernity in contrast to the rigidity of the flowering tree trunk, which is not unlike the classicism of Renaissance-era models.
Provenance: private collection.
We would like to thank Mr Alain Richarme for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work.
