Description
Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827–1875) Joseph Delattre Bronze medallion with a brown patina. A proof signed “Jn. Bte Carpeaux”, inscribed “To his friend Mal Delattre” and dated 1851. 27.5 x 27.5 x 3 cm JOSEPH DELATTRE Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux often created medallions as a way of expressing his gratitude or friendship. During the summer of 1851, he stayed at the Château de Raismes, invited by its owners, Mr and Mrs Delerue, who were also hosting a whole group of young people at the time. Whilst working on the bust of Mrs Delerue, who was soon to pass away, he also produced busts of various visitors to the château, such as Abbé Lux, who had come to preach a mission; Anselme Chérier, brother of the painter Bruno Chérier; the architect Louis Dutouquet; and others. This medallion depicts one of his close friends, Marshal Delattre, whom we have been able to identify. The young man is depicted in the classical style, revealing his left profile in a rather classical manner, which demonstrates the influence of Carpeaux’s new master, Duret. It is worth noting that this medallion is larger than most of the others, which have a diameter of 16 cm.
