LAUGHING NEAPOLITAN WOMAN
“The effigy of Anna Foucart was adapted in 1863 with a Neapolitan hairstyle for the Laughing Neapolitan Woman. The Laughing Neapolitan Man, modelled on the Shellfish Fisherman with the addition of drapery, forms its counterpart.
In Carpeaux’s published works, these are the only busts that are frequently found as a pair, and their production is one of the most abundant in the collection.
Provenance: private collection.
We would like to thank Mr Alain Richarme for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work.
