Description
Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827–1875) Shell Fisherman (large version) Bronze with a richly nuanced brown patina, Height: 89 cm, Length: 43 cm, Depth: 54 cm Specimen signed “J.Bte Carpeaux”, originally cast and produced by the studio, bearing the stamps “Propriété Carpeaux” and the Imperial Eagle. Circa 1870 SHELL FISHERMAN “This work, the first piece submitted by Carpeaux during his stay at the French Academy in Rome, was inspired by the gesture of a child he observed on a beach in Naples in 1856. It pays homage to the *Young Neapolitan Fisherman Playing with a Turtle* (1831 Salon) by François Rude, who was his teacher; the influence of Francisque Duret, his second teacher, is also evident in the young boy’s smile, which recalls that of *The Young Dancer Playing the Tarantella* (1833 Salon). Given the work’s success – the marble sculpture was purchased by the Emperor at the 1863 Salon – Carpeaux wished to retain the reproduction rights and capitalise on the model, which was first reproduced in bronze, then in terracotta and biscuit porcelain. Faced with the difficulty of selling it in life-size, he asked Ferdinand Barbedienne in 1863 to have a version made at one-third the original size using the Collas process, for which this publisher held the exclusive rights.
